"We are hunted down but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going. Through suffering, these bodies of ours constantly share in the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies". - 2 Corinthians 4:9-10
Emmie, the youngest of 5 children, adopted from South Korea when she was 14 months old, wasn't expected to live to be 2! She is now 8 years old, but has endured much more in her short life than most of us ever will. She was born with several congenital heart & lung defects and DiGeorge Syndrome, which has 185 anamolies associated with it.
Emmie has had 7 open heart surgeries so far, suffered cardiac arrest, strokes, and severe neurological damage. She can no longer eat or drink, requiring a G-J Tube to feed into her small intestine, which has also required many surgeries due to complications. She also has several bone fractures at a time, due to poor bone density.
She is severely immuno-compromised and cannot be in a classroom setting, so Mom homeschools her, as well as her siblings.
She requires the aid of a wheelchair, is hooked up to monitors continuously, requires around-the-clock heart failure, GI, and pain meds, and is now battling a new life threatening illness.
Emmie presently has several compression fractures in her spine, as a result of poor bone density. She is now in a body cast, for at least the next 18 months.
The family is also suffering extreme financial setbacks, and now a single-parent household, desperately trying to save the family home.
Mom is doing all she can, working from home as she cares for Emmie and gives heart failure meds around the clock, through the night.
Thank you for keeping this family in your prayers! They are still holding on to God's promises and KNOW that He will HEAL Emmie and provide all that's needed!
God is good ... ALL the time!
The Brave Little Soul
Not too long ago in Heaven there was a little soul who took wonder in observing the world. She especially enjoyed the love she saw there and often expressed this joy with God. One day however the little soul was sad, for on this day she saw suffering in the world. She approached God and sadly asked, "Why do bad things happen; why is there suffering in the world?"
God paused for a moment and replied, "Little soul, do not be sad, for the suffering you see, unlocks the love in people’s hearts." The little soul was confused. "What do you mean," she asked." God replied, "Have you not noticed the goodness and love that is the offspring of that suffering? Look at how people come together, drop their differences and show their love and compassion for those who suffer. All their other motivations disappear and they become motivated by love alone."
The little soul began to understand and listened attentively as God continued, "The suffering soul unlocks the love in people’s hearts much like the sun and the rain unlock the flower within the seed. I created everyone with endless love in their heart, but unfortunately most people keep it locked up and hardly share it with anyone. They are afraid to let their love shine freely, because they are afraid of being hurt. But a suffering soul unlocks that love. I tell you this - it is the greatest miracle of all. Many souls have bravely chosen to go into the world and suffer - to unlock this love – to create this miracle - for the good of all humanity."
Just then the little soul got a wonderful idea and could hardly contain herself. With her wings fluttering, bouncing up and down, the little soul excitedly replied, "I am brave; let me go! I would like to go into the world and suffer so that I can unlock the goodness and love in people’s hearts! I want to create that miracle!" God smiled and said, "You are a brave soul I know, and thus I will grant your request.
But even though you are very brave you will not be able to do this alone. I have known since the beginning of time that you would ask for this and so I have carefully selected many souls to care for you on your journey. Those souls will help you create your miracle; however they will also share in your suffering. Some of these souls are most special and will care for you, help you and suffer along with you, far beyond the others. They have already chosen a name for you........EMMIE."
God and the brave little soul shared a smile, and then embraced. In parting, God said, "Do not forget little soul that I will be with you always. Although you have agreed to bear the pain, you will do so through my strength. And if the time should come when you feel that you have suffered enough, just say the word, think the thought, and you will be brought back to heaven."

EMILY GRACE
Emmie was born in Seoul, Korea, on November 28, 1999. She was cyanotic at birth, causing doctors to fear a heart defect.
Their fears were confirmed with a diagnosis of Tetralogy of Fallot with Pulmonary Atresia
and Major Aorta Pulmonary Collateral Arteries.
She had her first of (so far) 7 open heart surgeries at the age of 3 months, and her second at 11 months, both in Korea.
Emmie's family was all the way across the world in the U.S. when they found Emmie, but God brought them together because Emmie needed a family ... and her family needed her!
Doctors explained how sick Emmie was, but that only confirmed the fact that she needed a Mommy!
Emmie arrived in America at the age of 14 months. She was very sick and doctors here began planning to help her.
She was soon diagnosed with DiGeorge Syndrome, which has 185 known anamolies associated with it, many of which
Emmie already clearly has, and is the cause of her severe heart defects.
She endured her next open heart surgery at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, at the age of 20 months; others at 23 months,
26 months, 2 1/2 years, and 2 years 9 months.
She suffered a cardiac arrest and endocarditis (infection inside her heart) 2 weeks later at the age of 2 years 9 1/2 months, and another heart surgery days after that, to repair that damage.
During this time, she had a FLAT-LINE EEG! This means NO brain activity!
Emmie struggled on, as her family and friends prayed, and two months later, just days before her 3rd birthday, she had another surgery hoping to correct what was believed to be severe GI problems.
During this surgery she also had a G-tube placement, as she can no longer eat or drink from the neurological damage.
The GI surgery proved to be unsuccessful, as the vomiting episodes persisted, and 4 years later, at the age of 7, Emmie was diagnosed with Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS).
Due to the constant vomiting, Emmie is often hospitalized for IV fluids, as dehydration causes heart failure, and she must be heavily sedated, putting her into a deep sleep to help limit her suffering.
The relentless vomiting and wretching has caused her esophogus to tear.
The vomiting is also dangerous for Emmie because she aspirates, causing her lungs to fill up with fluid.
Emmie now also has several compression fractures in her spine.
A bone density scan showed that she has severe osteopenia; extremely thin & weak bones.
Her heart rates & blood pressures from the pain are dangerously high, and we pray they will not cause another cardiac arrest to her already sick heart.
Emmie is now in a body cast made at A.I. Dupont Hospital for Children, and will remain in the body cast for at least 18 months!
The body cast is not relieving any of her pain as it should, and further testing: spinal taps, ultrasounds, brain MRIs and CT scans, tons of blood work and very strange and sometimes painful tests, have all revealed nothing.
When Emmie is feeling well, she loves to "eat" and "cook" pretend food, play Barbies, watch Veggie Tales movies, color with her brother and sisters, and beat her mom at Candyland!
If she's feeling ok, she wears her contageous smile, and even says "thank you" to the IV and Phlebotomy teams after they stick her for blood or an IV.
She is full of joy, and inspires everyone who has ever met her. Even some who haven't!
We truly mean it when we say, "Be careful, she will steal your heart!"
For now, Emmie remains in a body cast, and in a lot of pain, as we await our next round of aggressive IV infusion treatments for her bones.
Emily Grace, or "Emmie"
as she is lovingly known,
is a sweet little girl from Marlton, NJ
who is battling
a life-threatening, complex heart and lung defect ...
Emmie arrived from South Korea
at the age of 14 months.
Mommy, Kim, knew how very sick Emmie was, but
that just reassured her that Emmie needed
a Mommy by her side during all her surgeries
and lengthy hospital stays.
Emmie's siblings agreed, and the family
decided they were prepared to do whatever they
had to for Emmie ...
Of course, they had no idea HOW MUCH Emmie
would have to endure
physically, or how much time the entire family
would have to spend LIVING in
Children's Hospital, OR ultimately how much the
family really needed HER !
So far, at the age of 8, Emmie has endured SEVEN
open heart surgeries, and doctors are discussing more!
Emmie has spent several months at a time in
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Cardiac Intensive Care Unit,
where she has suffered many complications.
Several times doctors didn't believe that
Emmie would make it through the night, but she is
still fighting, and has been surrounded by the prayers
of her church family and friends
who believe that GOD heals.
During a 4-month long hospital stay
from August to December of 2002,
Emmie suffered a cardiac arrest.
Her heart was so sick, and her heart rate
got so high, it just stopped.
Doctors did chest compressions and shocked her heart,
and finally got her back. Praise the Lord !
But the heart stopping caused severe, permanent brain damage,
and many neurological problems...
As a result, Emmie can no longer eat or drink,
so she requires a stomach-small intestine G-J tube,
running continuously to feed her,
and several Cardiac, Neuro, and GI meds around the clock,
administered by Mom through the G-J tube.
Also due to the brain damage, as well as her heart & lung problems,
Emmie needs a wheelchair to get around.
Emmie also suffers from "central" issues, including problems with her brain
not being able to control her body temperature, so her fevers get as high as
108 DEGREES, requiring hospitalization, with a cooling blanket. She also
suffers from uncontrollable vomiting episodes, which causes her lungs to fill
up, and has also landed her in the hospital several times on life support.
Emmie still faces more surgeries
and a long road ahead of her, and she needs your prayers !!
Emmie and her family thank you all for keeping her in your daily prayers.
God bless !!!
100% of all donations go directly to a fund to assist Emmie's family
with the financial burdens brought on by her continued health challenges
and to help save the family home.
